Should I ask for a PTE rescore?

Sometimes you’ve done everything in your reach to achieve your desired score on the PTE Academic. You might have even felt like you did great on your exam and be feeling extremely confident. But when you got your results they just weren’t it. Should you ask for a PTE rescore?

What is a PTE rescore?

When you ask for a PTE rescore, you’re basically making an appeal for Pearson to reevaluate your test. This could happen because you think there was a malfunction in the equipment or in the evaluation system and you believe your scores were unfair considering your performance.

What questions can be rescored?

The only questions that can be rescored are spoken responses and open-ended written responses, such as Summarize Spoken Text, Summarize Written Text and the Essay. This means you should be very confident about your speaking and writing skills to ask for a rescore.

How likely is it that my score will go up?

The PTE is corrected twice by an advanced AI system. It’s very unlikely that your score will change upon further review. It is also a possibility that your score will actually go down, and because the final score is the one that counts, you should try and avoid that as much as you can.

What’s the deadline to ask for a rescore?

You can contact Pearson Customer Service to ask for a rescore up to 14 days after you’ve received your current score. However, you can only ask for a rescore of your latest PTE test. You also need to request the rescore before you schedule another exam, so keep that in mind.

Do I have to pay for a rescore?

Yes, the rescore doesn’t come for free. You can spend over USD$100 to have your test rescored. You can check the official fees with the Customer Service team. If for some reason any of your scores change, you will be fully refunded. Otherwise, the fee will not be returned.

Consider retaking the exam.

Because of the unlikelihood of your score increasing with a rescore request, Pearson itself advises candidates to just retake the exam. The PTE is very easy to book and the results come out around 3 days after the exam day. Just don’t book a new exam before getting your results.

Will institutions be able to see my previous scores?

Institutions can only see your PTE score if you allow them to. That’s why you can take the test as many times as you want until you achieve your desired score. Don’t worry if you get a lower result than you have before.

Do we recommend a PTE rescore?

Overall, asking for a PTE rescore is usually not the best idea. If you’re entirely certain that there was a mistake with your score, you can go after a rescore, but keep in mind that the likelihood of your results changing is very low. Don’t waste your energy, time or money on that.
