Is time management important in the PTE Academic Test?

The short answer is: definitely! Being able to do PTE time management well is essential when doing the exam and that’s why it’s one of the things you should focus on the most when preparing for the PTE Academic Test.

Time management as a skill

Being able to manage your time efficiently doesn’t apply only to taking the PTE Test. All exams have a stipulated time to be completed, as do most things in our lives. If you can manage your time well in your life in general, it might be easier for you to do it in the PTE. But there’s still time to learn!

Become familiar with the exam

In order to manage your time well, you must first know all the parts of the exam. Take time to learn what each part of the exam consists of and use that to your advantage on exam day! If you’re having trouble understanding the questions, look for a course that will teach you everything you need!

Know which questions carry more weight

Not all tasks are worth the same score in the PTE Academic. That’s why when we talk about time management in PTE, we have to remind students to focus on tasks that will significantly impact their scores. Some of them include: Read Aloud, Repeat Sentences, Summarize written text etc.

Know your strengths and weaknesses

As long as you don’t need a perfect score, there’s a little bit of wiggle room to make mistakes. If you waste too much time on a task that isn’t your strong suit, without considering that you could be using your time to make sure you get other questions right, you might regret it later in the test.

Use the structure of the exam to your advantage

A lot of the questions on the PTE are individually timed. This means that for those ones you won’t be left without time to answer a question. This can help you better organize yourself. However, mind the Reading section, it is timed overall, so you could run out of time and still have questions left.

PTE time management practice

A mistake a lot of people make is studying for the PTE without timing themselves. When you’re practicing different exercises make sure to always time yourself according to the official time limits. There’s no point in doing an amazing job in 40 minutes if you only have 20 to complete it.

Try to cut down your time gradually

Don’t worry if you aren’t able to fully answer questions in the allotted time when first studying. In the questions you’re having the most problems with, try cutting down time gradually, shaving off a few minutes at a time so you don’t stress yourself out too much.

Do Mock Tests

Whether you’re doing an official or non-official mock test, you should always focus on your time management. Timing yourself when practicing separate tasks is a good idea, but doing an entire practice exam focusing on managing your time will make it easier for you to do it on exam day.
