The main differences between PTE and IELTS 2023

English language proficiency tests are a crucial requirement for anyone seeking to study, work or live in an English-speaking country. The most popular ones are the Pearson Test of English (PTE) and the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). In this article, we will explore the main differences between these two tests and help you decide which one is right for you.

Acceptance Range

The acceptance range of a language proficiency test refers to the number of countries and institutions that recognize it. IELTS is recognized by more than 10,000 institutions and organizations in over 140 countries, including Australia, Canada, the UK, and the USA. PTE, on the other hand, is recognized by more than 6,000 organizations in 150 countries, including the same countries as IELTS.

Before comparing the differences between PTE and IELTS, it’s important to note that the most crucial aspect for any student seeking to study or work in an English-speaking country is to first research the opportunities they want to pursue and understand which English language proficiency test is accepted.

It’s worth noting that in many cases, both PTE and IELTS will be an option for applicants.

About the exam

One of the differences between PTE and IELTS is the duration of the test. The PTE Academic is a 2-hour computer-based test, whereas the IELTS is a 2 hours and 45 minutes paper-based or computer-based test.

Taking the PTE Academic, you can expect to receive your results within five business days, while for the IELTS, it may take up to 13 business days to receive your results If you are taking the paper exam and between 3-5 business days on the computer test.

Skills assessed and the exam structure

The PTE and IELTS both assess the four core language skills: reading, writing, listening, and speaking. However, the structure of the tests differs significantly.

The PTE Academic is divided into three main sections with varying time limits for each:

The Writing and Speaking sections are combined and typically take between 54 and 67 minutes to complete. The Listening section lasts between 30 and 43 minutes, while the Reading section takes between 29 and 30 minutes.

On the other hand, the IELTS is divided into four separate sections:

Each with its time limit. The Listening section lasts for 30 minutes, the Reading section takes 60 minutes, the Writing section takes 60 minutes, and the Speaking section takes between 11 and 14 minutes.

How the exams are scored

One key difference between the two tests is the way they are scored. The PTE is considered fairer in terms of scoring because the test is 100% computer-corrected.

This eliminates any potential bias introduced by human examiners.

In contrast, while the IELTS Reading and Listening sections are marked automatically by a computer, the Writing and Speaking sections continue to be graded by trained Examiners.

How does the speaking section works?

On the PTE, you speak into a microphone, while on the IELTS, you speak to an examiner face-to-face. Some test-takers find it more comfortable to speak into a microphone, while others prefer the interaction with an examiner.

How much does each test cost?

The price of a language proficiency test can be a deciding factor for many people. IELTS can cost anywhere between $140 and $310, depending on the country you are taking the test in. PTE, on the other hand, costs around $285 to $275, again depending on the country.

Scoring System

The scoring system of a language proficiency test is important as it determines your level of proficiency. IELTS uses a 9-band scale to measure proficiency, with 1 being the lowest and 9 being the highest. PTE, on the other hand, uses a scoring system from 10-90, with 10 being the lowest and 90 being the highest.

Why do we recommend PTE?

After comparing the differences between PTE and IELTS, it is clear that PTE has some advantages over IELTS. PTE is a fully computer-based test, which means that it provides fast and accurate results.

If you are planning to take the PTE, it is highly recommended that you enroll in a preparation course to increase your chances of success. Here at PTE Smart, we have created four different courses based on students’ needs. Check them out and start your preparation right away!
